Hiring Frictions in Urban Labor Markets: Experimental Evidence from India

Abstract:

Hiring frictions constrain the ability of firms to recruit workers. Online job portals may ease these frictions, but small firms may be reluctant to hire outside their traditional networks. In partnership with an online job portal, we sample over 1,500 firms and randomize access to premium advertising services, applicant verification services, or both. Access to premium advertising services doubles applications to vacancies; employers in the joint treatment who, in addition, have access to applicant verification services are more likely to engage with applicant profiles and---in contrast to the individual treatments--- are significantly more likely to make new hires. Additional experimental variation in applicant verification and a willingness to pay exercise suggest that trust in applicants mediates the effectiveness of online job portals as a recruitment method for small firms.
