Firm-Level Upgrading in Developing Countries

Author: CDEP Co-Director Eric Verhoogen.

In principle, firms in developing countries benefit from the fact that advanced technologies and products have already been invented in developed countries and can simply be adopted, a process often referred to as industrial upgrading. But for many developing-country firms, this advantage remains elusive. What is getting in the way? This project reviews the state of knowledge in the economic literature about the barriers to upgrading.

The paper will be published in the Journal of Economic Literature. The final pre-publication version is available here.
