RESEARCH PROJECT

Imperfections in Migrant Labor Networks

Investigators: CDEP Affiliate Suresh Naidu with Shing-Yi Wang and Yaw Nyarko

This project assesses the degree of selection, screening, and market power in migration to the UAE. In one paper the investigators exploit a reform that let migrant workers switch employers without having to return to their source country to estimate the degree of monopsony power migrant employers have. In ongoing work, the investigators are conducting an intervention with recruitment centers in India to assess the degree of screening and selection into migration. Preliminary results suggest that migrant workers are not self-selected so much as screened by employers.
